Renovating the heritage of the Maison Française d'Oxford

Since its foundation in 1946, hospitality has been at the heart of the Maison Française d’Oxford’s (MFO) mission. Students, researchers, and prominent figures from France and the UK are welcomed to stay or attend events, fostering exchanges between the two countries. In 1967, the MFO aimed to showcase the excellence of contemporary French creation. To this end, the dining room and bedrooms were furnished in collaboration with the Mobilier National, using models by renowned designers. The challenge is twofold: to continue welcoming visitors in the best possible conditions by restoring the heritage entrusted to it, and to renew and furnish the reception areas to promote European and French design and craftsmanship.

How to preserve the MFO's heritage

Almost 60 years after the building’s inauguration, the dining room furniture needs to be restored, and the bedroom furniture replaced.

The dining room

In 1967, with the MFO located in the heart of the University, the dining room had to compete with the halls of Oxonian colleges . This room includes:

  • A set of 21 “coffee bean” chairs, with leather seats and backs, rosewood and chrome legs, designed by François-Xavier and Claude, Lalanne, a famous French couple of designers.
  • 4 tables desiegned by French designer Roger Legrand.
  •  Matching hanging sideboards in rosewood veneer and marble top.

Accomodation and bedrooms

The MFO wishes to offer accommodation close to the centre of Oxford for French researchers and students, enabling them to carry out their work in optimal conditions, while guaranteeing the best rates for accommodation. In the main building, the MFO currently has 11 student rooms and 1 guest room.

Originally furnished with pieces by designer Olivier Mourgue and high-quality textiles, it is necessary to continue to equip them with high-quality furniture reflecting French craftsmanship in furniture design.
