Construction of new premises at the Maison Française d'Oxford
The Maison Française d’Oxford (MFO), a major player in academic relations between France and the United Kingdom, also comprises a remarkable group of buildings in the north of Oxford.
The MFO premises represent an exceptional infrastructure. They are located at the heart of Oxford’s academic ecosystem. They are set in a highly preserved landscape and environmental setting. They are an essential tool for the MFO’s academic and cultural influence, hosting students, researchers, artists and intellectuals all year round.
The 5,000 m2 site comprises three buildings, one of which has been unoccupied since the MFO moved onto the site: the former stables of the Westbury Lodge annexe, a Victorian house.
The MFO’s current capacity is insufficient. The 12 rooms and 7 flats available are occupied most of the time, and many requests many requests cannot be met. Spaces dedicated to individual work (offices) or collective work (meeting rooms) are also under strain, despite the creation of a shared open space on the lower floor of the library.
Fitting out the stables and extending them by constructing a new building would make it possible to :
- provide accommodation for students and researchers ;
- develop the programme of cultural and scientific activities hosted on the premises.
What expansion project for the MFO reception buildings?
In 2024, the architectural firm MEDA carried out a complete study for the renovation and/or extension of the former stables.
